INTRO - Researching SPIER family from Merzhausen Germany #germany

Alan Spier <alan@...>

Hello GerSig,
I just joined the group. I have been doing genealogy research on and off
for several years but only consider myself to be a beginner. I live in the
Town of Glastonbury which is a suburb of Hartford, Connecticut in the
United States. My native and only language is English. I consider myself an
intermediate computer user and have intermediate Internet skills.

I trace my own SPIER family tree back to my great, great grandfather,
Ascher SPIER, born 1813 in Merzhausen, Germany - now a village center
within the Town of Willinghausen in the State of Hesse, the Administrative
Region of Kassel, and the District of Schwalm-Eder-Kreis. It's to be
distinguished >from one or two other "Merzhausens" located elsewhere in Germany.

Ascher was a schoolteacher within the Jewish community and eventually moved
to Neukirchen, then to Rotenberg an der Fulda, and then in 1864 to Kassel
where he became the executive director (Hausvater ) of the Jewish
Orphanage. Along the way, he married Besschen (Betty) FLEISCHHACKER and
they had several children, three of whom immigrated to the US including my
great grandfather (Siegwart) in about 1859, his brother, Moritz, who also
settled in the same place (New Haven Connecticut), and Nathan, who settled
in Rockaway Park, New York. The other children (Leopold, Benjamin and
Pauline) possibly moved to Kassel with their parents and, so far as I know,
remained in Germany for the rest of their lives.

I have no information about the date of death of Ascher or Betty or of the
subsequent history of the children who remained in Germany or of Nathan,
although I know my grandfather made a trip to Kassel in the early part of
the 20th century to visit a cousin. I have no information about Nathan or
the Fleischhacker side of the family. I have complete genealogical
information about Siegwart and Moritz.

My immediate primary research goals now are to find out more about this
branch of my family including Nathan.

My JGFF Researcher ID number is 53848.

The German family name I have entered in the JGFF (JewishGen Family Finder)
is SPIER. The ancestral towns entered for the Spiers are Merzhausen,
Willinghausen, Rotenburg an der Fulda and Kassel.
