Prior to 1906 (The "new law" forming the INS) Naturalization forms and
questions were individually determined by the several states - and even the
courts within a state. In other words there was no standardization. In
most states arrival year only was shown since people could not remember the
date of arrival more than 5 years previously. Otherwise for Mass. the form
stated "Arrived on or about ........." (Thousands chose the 4th of July
or St Patricks Day.)
