Dear Ty and Genners,
I am willing to stand partially corrected. Yes, upon closer
examination of the LDS index to New York, New York (City), births
(beginning 1881) and deaths (beginning 1888) do run to 1965. I was
confusing them with marriages which, according to the entry is
indexed to 1937.
However, as I write this, I am looking at a photocopies of the birth
index covering the period 1893-1900 and the names are all indexed in
Soundex order. It is confusing in that the index "mixes" up similar
sounding consonants. My search for KOENIGSBERG finds the "Ks"
interleaved with the "Cs." That is, the Soundex alphabet is not in
strict alphabetical order.
