JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen 1890 color photographs of Jerusalem, and the Bonfils family #general

Dear Genners

I have come across some magnificent color photographs of Jerusalem, Sea of
Galilee, and other Holy Land sites, that were taken by Bonfils in around
1890, and hope to use them in my family history.

Can anyone tell me more about the photographer and his work. I believe the
actual photographer was Adrienne Bonfils, whose French father had set up a
family atelier in Beirut, Lebanon. Adrienne took over the family's business
after his father's death, and then his mother took it on herself.

Was the family related to the famous Sefardi family Bonfils / Tov-Elem? What
kind of camera would have been used in 1890 to produce color photographs (a
3-way beam splitter?) and what would have been the 3-color printing process
used.

If anyone else is interested in the phorographs, around 85 are on view at the
Tel Hai Museum in Israel, and they (and tens of thousands of more recent
photographs of Israel), can be purchased online for a very nominal fee
through the Israel Government Press Office
< www.gpo.gov.il >

I'd appreciate hearing >from anyone who's familiar with the early history of
color photography or the Bonfils family.

Many thanks,
