However, on Ellis Island she is listed as Mariemlte Milgram. I am

on the Ship Manifest. Does anybody have any knowledge about this strange
name change? Who should I trust, my aunts or Ellis Island.? >>

==That's an easy one. The name was incorrrectly transcribed and almost
certainly was Mariette. Mariette would be called Etta by friends and family.

==Fellow-genner Edward Rosenbaum, < erosenbaum@... > in his
presentation at the jewishgenealogy conference in Toronto on Wednesday
mentioned a shareware program that will generate all likely variations
based on mistranscriptions. This is combined with the American Soundex
system and the Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex system,
and thus allows you to access the names on most major
genealogy databases with just one click.
