JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Hebrew spelling of surname UTITZ #general

i would expect the jews of prague
to have spoken yiddish at the time
the stones were put up, so the correct
question is "how would you spell this name in yiddish?".
(the spelling rules for yiddish are significantly
different >from hebrew, by the way.)

also, the "-itz" ending may actually have been pronounced
"itch", which could affect the spelling.

my only knowledge of yiddish is >from a couple
of semesters in elementary school,
so i can't be of much more help.

good luck,
tom klein, toronto
