JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen From 1930 Census: Where in Lithuania? #general
LindaJim Morzillo <jmorzil1@...>
I hope that someone can help me figure out the place (Zahina?) stated - not
clearly - on a page of the 1930 census. Please look at: http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=1821 This family, distantly related to me, consisted of parents born at this place in Russia and their three children born in Pennsylvania. My family came >from the Raseiniai area of Lithuania, the closest to that spelling and geographical place is Zuikine as shown in the JG Shtetl Seeker. How would the person taking the census hear the birthplace spoken by these immigrants with Yiddish accents? Would it be a good guess that Zuikine is where they meant? Other vital records just have Russia filled in and the parents did not become citizens. Thank you!
