Can anyone tell me whether 'Polya' is a female given name? I never heard of it before. She was called 'Paula' when she came to the States. I would have thought it was 'Pessia' or something like that, but my informant tells me it was 'Polya'. She was born in Ekaterinslav on the Don River in Ukraine in the early 20th Century.

Polya (Pola) is an nickname of the feminine Ukrainian name Polina (adopted most probably >from Paulina). There is no direct Bible relation to this name, nevertheless this is an adopted Jewish name.
