In his mail (Re:Can't Find Great Grandparents Entry to US) Howard Kaufman
wondered why his grand*F*ather's brother used the name of his
grand*M*other's brother (who never left Belarus) to enter the US .
I suppose Howard's g-gparent not only used the name but was also probably
using a set of his relative's papers when leaving for America. Maybe the
document's owner had already served in the Army, and the emigrant had not,
and would not be allowed to leave - so this helpful relative gave the
emigrant his own proof of identity.
Maybe the relative sacrificed his papers for his relative, and trusted he
would somehow manage without them. Perhaps he had reported he lost his
papers, was able to have duplicates made with great complication, and gave
the emigrant one set. Maybe he did not know his papers were missing.
Maybe the emigrant was not evading the Army, just feared reprisals for the
family solely because of his emigration. Maybe this relative had died and
the original papers were kept and used by the surviving relative after
being reported lost - no on-line computers in the border!. Maybe they were
used because there was no additional direct family for the deceased paper
owner, and therefore no fear of direct reprisals other than to the
emigrant if discovered.
Last year I attended the presentation of a book referring to Jewish
pioneers in Argentine Patagonia. Russian Jews travelled thousands of miles
including crossing the ocean to reach Buenos Aires. Some of the families
boarded the train and went as far >from Buenos Aires as the train would
take them, no matter the extreme conditions in Patagonia at those early
The author said he had wondered during his years of research about the
reasons for this. His conclusion for some of the cases was that they felt
that - if they stayed in Buenos Aires - they would still be in danger of
being reached by "the long arm of the Tsar". Some felt they still were not
safe there, and the journey should take them as far away >from "Russia" as
