JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: PEREZ -- Jewish Surname? #general

Lifshitz-Krams Anne

I am confused since a few people in the
discussion boards at emphasize as
"non-Jewish Perez" or "Spanish Perez." It is mentioned
that Perez was originally a Spanish surname. On the
other hand, Perez is a Biblical name too. Any help
would be appreciated.
==== Just in order to clarify. As a lot of surnames
that are possibly Jewish (for instance Meyer),
the name Perez can have two different origins. As Udi
Cain explains, as a Jewish surname Perez has a biblical
origine. When it is a spanish name, it just means
"son of Pedro" (see Notes on Spanish Genealogy,

If there are so many Spanish Jews with this name
(and few among East European Jews) one could think
that it is because of this possible confusion.

Anyway the only way to know if your Perez are Jews
is to research your genealogy....
