JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Help! Odd Name on Manifest #general

The given name looks to be "Kremie." The first "e" is written
like an "i" but is un-dotted. The "i" near the end is dotted.
I took a look at the manifest. Steve's "Kremie" may be a "Kreine",
with the i's dot slightly out of line.

I learned >from an envelope that my great aunt Kreina was
also called Katya and her Russian name was Ekaterina.
It is written in a 1930s envelope for a letter >from Kharkov,
in present Ukraine. Hope this gives a clue to trace "Kreine".

As a sideline, a later envelope - the only other envelope remaining -
has a rubber stamp of the "Bureau d'Echanges Etrang." ...
The office for exchanges with foreign countries... I imagine
these were the censors in Kiev that helped in making letter
writing a "dangerous activity" and in contact being lost.

I am now very glad to have found eight living first cousins
of my mother in Aug 2003... and that her 78 year old cousin
met my 82 year old mother last November in Buenos Aires,
and a younger cousin is coming to visit soon, and
then my mother is going to Israel to meet more "new" cousins !
