JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Death Certificate - Not in NYC #general

I have yet to find a "Jewish" funeral home in NYC that admits to having
records more than 5 years old!

And, in addition, some of the old undertakers commonly used by our ancestors
are no longer in business. Anyone have any idea where the records >from The
West End might be -- and how they may be accessed?

The folks at Riverside suggested that I try the Board of Health.

Regarding death certificates -I have learned that in
the New York Metropolitan Area (inc. New York City -
all the boroughs, Nassau County and northern New
Jersey) death certificates are not required by the
cemetery. They may be needed by the
mortuary/undertaker but the cemetery only needs the
burial permit and/or the transit permit and that is
all they have on file. This document has only minimal
statistical information: name, possibly DOB, DOD,
Location of Death, and cause of death.

The staff at Beth David suggested that undertakers
keep their files for a fairly long time and that would
be the best place to look for additional information
or a copy of the death certificate.
