It is possible that a person's name does not appear on the Social Security Death
Index because their employment was not covered by Soc. Sec. Just because someone
has a Soc. Sec. number, does not mean their employment was covered by soc. sec.
People who worked for city, state, county, or public education are covered by
their public retirement system and therefore are not entitled to any type of
benefits >from Soc. Sec.
I beleive that one's name appears on the SSDI only if they received monthly
benefits and the death was reported to the Soc. Sec. Admin. Usually, the funeral
home reports the death.
