from the time I got started in genealogy I have been trying to find out about a
picture of my mggf, He is shown in an elaborate uniform which I discovered was
worn by hussars. Much research and many postings later, that was all that I knew
until I came across the web site of Mark Conrad
( http://home.comcast.net/~markconrad/). I sent Mark a copy of the photo and the
next day I received a reply which not only told me that my ggf was a
non-commissioned officer in His Majesty's Life-Guards Hussar Regiment
(Leib-Gvardiya Gusarskii Ego Velichestva polk), but also detailed the items within
the photograph to support his finding as well as a description of the color of
each item in the black and white photo. He also sent me a photo of a group of
hussars >from my ggf's regiment which clearly shows all of the details in my
photograph.

Mark gave me permission to post his website so that those of you who might have
questions about relatives in uniforrn might get help in identification. Mark's
expertise is primarily the Russian army, but he can also help with some other
uniforms.

The one question which Mark could not answer was how an obvious Jew (Hirsch
Englisher) could have been a non-com in an elite regiment.
