I agree with Alexander Sharon that the birthplace on the manifest is
Holvanisk (Golovanevsk). It is confirmed on p.960, column 11, which
indicates that the nearest relative was >from Holvanisk, *Podolia*. Podolia
was the Guberniya (province) for Golovanevsk at that time.
My grandfather was also born in Golovanevsk, a shtetl of about 5000 with
about 60-70% Jewish at the turn of the 20th century when the 1897 All
Russian census was taken.
Coincidentally, Jacob, perhaps you may be related to Steve Rosen who heads
up an informal group of individuals around the world researching their
ancestors >from Golovanevsk, since you have the same last name.
