JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Is SHEARER a Jewish or German name? #general

Dear Orinne:

SCHEARER is probably a spelling adopted in an English-speaking country.
The e-a combination would be unusual in a German-speaking environment.

That said, the name, however spelled, has no particular connections to
Judaism, but was certainly used by Jews. It's German in origin, like so
many other names used by Jews, and was definitely used by Gentiles too.
There is very little that one could conclude about a person >from knowing
this name and little or nothing else--as with most names.

Is Schearer ever *not* a Jewish name??

Thanks in anticipation,
