That is not the case. I have been asked about *my* relationship to X; *my* relationship is that of a grandson to a grandfather; hence "[I am his] grandson". I cannot answer the question with "grandfather". "Grandson" and "grandfather" are both relationships. The question was: "What is your relationship?" If I am his grandson, then my relationship is "grandson". If I answer the question with a complete sentence rather than a fragment (by removing your brackets, for example), the problem disappears: "He's my grandfather" explains all. It isn't a matter of being a genealogist or not; personally, I am an engineer, for example, though I have many interests. It is instead a matter of paying attention to the question before answering it. If you tell me that "normal people" often don't do that, I am inclined to agree. -- Stan Goodman, Qiryat Tiv'on, Israel Searching: NEACHOWICZ/NOACHOWICZ, NEJMAN/NAJMAN, SURALSKI: >from Lomza Gubernia ISMACH: >from Lomza Gubernia, Galicia, and Ukraina HERTANU, ABRAMOVICI, LAUER: >from Dorohoi District, Romania GRISARU, VATARU: >from Iasi, Dorohoi, and Mileanca, Romania See my interactive family tree (requires Java 1.1.6 or better). the URL is: http://www.hashkedim.com For reasons connected with anti-spam/junk security, the return address is not valid.
