Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay Meeting
Sunday, January 9, 2005
Beyond Names and Dates
Discovering the Life and Times of Your Ancestors
Presented by National Jewish Book Awards Finalist - Emily Rose

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay will meet at Gulf Coast Jewish
Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater, Florida on Sunday, January 9,
2005 at 2:00 P.M.

Author Emily Rose will share her personal adventures of researching in the
German archives and the expertise she gathered on researching
German-language documents. Even if you don't have German roots on your
family tree, the small German town experience as depicted in Portraits of
Our Past: Jews of the German Countryside is somewhat typical of Eastern
European small town experiences. The techniques will help anyone doing
family research.

Emily interweaves her personal journey to learn about the centuries-old
portraits hanging in her grandparents' home, her ancestors' lives, and the
larger experience of the rural German Jews in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Her curiosity led to remarkable research in the German archives where she
discovered over 2,600 documents that describe the life and times of the more
than 90% of the south German Jews who lived in the villages and small towns
until the 1870s. Overhead transparencies illustrate her talk.

The Jewish Publication Society published her book in 2001. The German
edition (translated >from English) was published in 1999. Emily gave
presentations at the 2002 and 2003 International Jewish Genealogy
Conferences. The Jewish Book Council selected her book, Portraits of Our
Past: Jews of the German Countryside, as a 2001-2 National Jewish Book
Awards Finalist. Her website is: www.PortraitsOfOurPast.com.

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay's library and research
resources are available to all meeting attendees and can be loaned out to
members. Anyone interested in learning how to do Jewish genealogy research
is invited to participate. Beginners as well as experienced researchers are
