JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen RE: Kitchener Internment Camp for Jewish Refugees in Kent #general

The internment camp concept was first realized under Lord Kitchener during
the Boer War in South Africa. In fact, very often internment camps since
that time have been called "Kitchener Camps" and were found in various
places in the British Empire.

This concept was expanded by the British government to include Jewish aliens
in both World War I and World War II. My grandfather was, in fact,
interned on the Isle of Man during WWI as he had not gained his British
citizenship at the time and had further served in Emperor Franz Josef's
Austro-Hungarian Army in the 1890's.

The Kitchener refugee camp in Richborough, Kent, England, was one of many
such camps in use during World War II in England. There are numerous
articles and books which discuss this subject and there are records to be
found in the Home Office. There are also memoires and collections to be
found in the Wiener Library and other places in England as well as the US
Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.

The Kitchener refugee camp in Richborough, Kent, England, was a refugee camp
for German and Austrian aliens. A number of the refugees were able to stay
in the camp for a year or so and then obtain papers and emigrate to other
countries such as America. Children >from the kindertransports were also
sent there.

It was a somewhat incongruous policy of the British government and a defect
in their alien laws which caused them to intern the Jews as enemy aliens
when they were actually the victims of the Nazis.
