I think it important to understand that the Grand Duchy of Lithuania ceased to
exist under that name when the last of its lands came under Russian control as a
result of the 17th century Partitions of Poland and the Napoleonic Wars that
followed soon after. So saying that someone had a connection to the Grand Duchy
"during Czarist times" can be subtly misleading. When Czarist times rolled over
those lands, the Grand Duchy ceased to exist. Jews saw themselves as Litvaks
based on a larger geographic extent for Lithuania than remained during Czarist

The Grand Duchy of Lithuania had a very large territory, and at one point extended
from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
