Yes, the film is "Everything is Illuminated." It is partially fantasy, but
I found a good deal of truth in it and some inspiration. The hero of the
story is a "collector" who accumulates mementos as he goes through life.
Although some of his mementos are bizarre, I find that I'm a collector as
well having my father's doggerel poetry, my mother-in-law's Pioneer Days
costume, my aunt's oil portrait, etc. As genealogists we are all
collector's in hopes of recapturing the lives of our forebears. The humor
at the beginning of the movie contrasts starkly with the history of the
grandfather's shtetl and of the final revelation of his guide's identity.

The reviewers didn't like it nearly as well, but I hope this is helpful
