"Wayfayers" Author Stuart Tower
"Mass Jewish Emigration in the Early 20th Century"

Tower is the author of "The Wayfayers," an epic
historical novel focusing on the story of 60 young
Jewish men and women and their compelling march across
1500 miles of Europe in the early 1900s. In Yiddish
these wayfayers were called "fusgeyers."
Tower will discuss his extensive research about the
fusgeyers and their trek >from Romania to the ports

from which they sailed to America. These young

travelers were organized in an almost military fashion
and developed a pioneer spirit of self-help. In
crossing the miles on foot, they braved much adversity
and anti-Semitic acts.
Commenting on the book, Steven Spielberg said, "In
today's electronic society, plain old-fashioned,
captivating story-telling is rare. In "The Wayfayers,"
Stuart Tower has done just that." Two film production
companies are now considering making the book into a
possible feature film.
Tower, who lives in Southern California, has spoken at
genealogical society meetings around the world,
including a presentation in Washington, D.C. in 2003
when "The Wayfayers" was published. An earlier work of
his is "Withered Roots," where he described the lives
of Eastern European Jews who survived the Holocaust
and remained in their home countries.
