JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen 26th IAJGS Conference to present a PC Laboratory: A Step Up to Technology #general
Gloria Berkenstat Freund <gloria@...>
The 26th Conference of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical
Societies will be offering a new approach to technology as part of today's genealogical experience. The Conference, which takes place >from Sunday, August 13th to Friday, August 18th at the New York Marriott Marquis, will have a PC Laboratory. The intention is that students will be taught a function and then will be able to practice it. It is hoped that this will enable students to learn a skill quicker and retain more. It's harder to learn Word or Excel or researching Galicia on the internet >from a lecture. Stepping up to technology requires hands-on experience, and a much smaller teacher to student ratio than a lecture. The Laboratory will have 25 student PCs attached to a server and the Instructor will have a PC with an overhead display. The Conference hosts, the Jewish Genealogical Society of New York, have invested in a PC room with equipment, and a full time administrator. Because we are keeping the classes small (25 maximum) and each student will have a PC, we need to put in a reservation system and we need to ensure a smooth transition >from class to class. There will be a full PC track parallel to lecture tracks. There will be four intensive 2-hour PC courses on Sunday: 10am Intro to PCs and Windows Noon Genealogy on the Internet 2pm Intro to the Internet 4pm Using JewishGen's Databases and Search Capabilities Pre-registration for these Sunday classes ($10 fee for each 2 hour sessions) is required and can be made when registering for the Conference at http://www.jgsny2006.org/registration.cfm . Registration for the weekday classes ($5 fee for the 1+ hour sessions) will take place at the conference in the registration area initially, then at the classroom. We will be announcing the full range of weekday classes shortly. This is the first time a Conference has offered access to PC instruction. Help us make this a success.
