Answering the different recent postings concerning Paneriai
(Lithuania) : the link that may have been the source of a confusion between Russians and Germans as responsible for the murders in Paneriai may be the following. When they arrived in Paneriai in 1939, the Soviets started to build a huge oil warehouse for the nearby military airfield and they excavated deep pits to use for massive fuel dumps. The construction wasn't finished as in 1941 the area was occupied by the Nazis. Between July 1941 and August 1944 Paneriai became the mass murder site of approximately 100 000 victims. The executions were carried out by German units of SD and SS with help from local Lithuanian police unit Ypatingasis Burys. They used thesepits to bury the Jews they killed. There are much information about the killings in Lithuania in the book written by Alex Faitelson, entitled "Heroism and Bravery in Lithuania - 1941/1945". It must be reminded, once more, that 95 % of the Lithuanian Jews were killed during WWII, mostly with (and because) the help of their Lithuanian helpers. More than half of the 878 Jews >from France of the convoy #73, who were sent to the Baltic States in May 1944 (among whom was my own father) were killed in Lithuania too. -- Eve Line Blum-Cherchevsky Besancon (France) and also Cercle de Genealogie Juive (International JGS in Paris) http://www.genealoj.org
