We are all concerned that our genealogical work not be lost, however the
article regarding the longevity of digital storage on cd and dvd is somewhat
misleading.
According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, quality CD
and DVD discs will retain information for several tens of years. Quality
would be defined as those discs that use actual gold, and phthalocyanine
dye. Manufacturers of higher quality discs actually talk in terms of 50 to
100 years. It is true that both light and heat are detrimental to this
media, and proper storage is a must. Magnetic tape is also susceptible to
heat and humidity and its longevity is not limitless. Quality or archival
discs can be had at photo shops and on line. (PS: Any bearing capable of a
sustained 7200 rpm can only be quality)
