David Lewin helpfully directed Rosemary to the York Probate Registry to ask
them to search for wills.
You can do this yourself in London, covering the entire country. You search
the annual indexes (arranged by surname), remembering that probate sometimes
isn't granted until several years after death. Then if you find the
relevant information you take the book in which you have found the details
with a completed request to the desk, where it will be checked and the Folio
number added. You then take the form to the cashier, pay 5 GBP per will, take
your receipt back to the desk and the copy of the will should be ready for
collection within an hour. A brilliant service and I used it to great
effect yesterday.
The address is:
Principal Probate Registry
First Avenue House
42 - 49 High Holborn
London WC1V 6NP
I haven't got the opening hours, but I believe they are 9 - 5 Mon - Fri.
Good luck!
