The name Klonimus is found among 9th century Italian Jews. A leading
Italian family in which the name Klonimus was common migrated to France
in the 10th century. (This family incidentally authored much of the
High Holiday liturgy.) As Jews migrated >from France to Eastern Europe,
the name went with them. I have Klonimuses and Kalmans among my Italian
ancestors, my French ancestors, my Galician (Austrian) ancestors and my
Hungarian cousins. In short, it is an ancient and not unusual
Ashkenazic name, not a Hungarian name.
