GerSIG member Richard Oppenheimer is the subject of an article in the
Sarasota (Florida) Herald Newspaper. The article is lively,
interesting reading. It includes informaton about the
German Jewish History Awards as well as the Oppenheimer family's
Holocaust experience. http://tinyurl.com/mbzkacf

The story begins: "Richard Oppenheimer has to pause and collect
himself as he recalls a German schoolteacher telling him more about
his late mother's Holocaust ordeal than she had shared with him -- her
own son.
This was back in 2011. The man's name was Johannes Grotecke.
Grotecke was >from Bad Wildungen, >from which Oppenheimer's mother had
been evicted during the Nazi purges."

Both Mr. Oppenheimer and Mr. Grotecke, an Obermayer Awardee, are now
in Berlin for the Obermayer Awards program there.
"Coinciding with the Jan. 27, 1945, liberation of Auschwitz, the ceremonies
also are sponsored by the president of the Berlin Parliament [and GerSIG,
a division of] JewishGen, an Internet genealogy group."
