Dear Jewish Genners:

In today's (July 25, 2006) Federal Register there is a proposed interim
final rule regarding the reduction of hours for the National Archives
Building in DC and the and National Archives at College Park (MD) and for
visiting the Rotunda and National Archives Experience on the Constitution
Ave side of the National Archives Building. This rule and the changed hours
will go into effect October 2, 2006. It is proposed regulation
NARA-06-0007-0001.

The purposes of the proposed interim rule as stated in the preamble of the
regulations is fiscal restraint requiring, albeit, reluctantly to curtail
services during the times when only a small percentage of users are present
so that services can be provided during the time periods when the most
customers seek service. The proposed rule would eliminate all Saturday and
weekday evening hours so that for the Washington area buildings the
hours now would be only M-F 9AM-5PM. The proposed interim rule also
addresses reduced hours in the regional archives.

Anyone wishing to read the proposed regulations should go to
http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main then scroll down to
NARA-06-0007-0001 and click on the pdf icon to the far right to
download/print/read the proposed rule.

A public meeting relating to the rule will be held at the Jefferson Room in
the National Archives Building at 1 pm on August 3. Please enter through the
Special Events entrance on the Constitution Avenue side of the building
(between 7th St. and 9th St. NW). Reservations are not
required but space may be limited.

Any one interested in submitting comments on the proposed regulations
have until September 8, 2006. Those wishing to voice their comments on
the reduced hours may send written comments to:
Regulations Comments Desk (NPOL), Room 4100, Policy and Planning Staff,
National Archives and Records Administration,
8601 Adelphi Road,
College Park, MD 20740-6001.
Or by Fax to 301-837- 0319.

This is likely a "done deal" due to the budget AND the recent flooding which
caused $2 million in damages to the Archives buildings in D.C.
