In a letter written circa 1900, there's a reference to an ancestor of
mine - Yaakov WOLINSKY - living in Nablus aka Shechem, Palestine, and
the translator found that unusual: that a Jew was living in that
town. I know that my ancestor was something of an irrigation engineer
- it was said that he worked for the Ottoman government - and I
wonder if that accounts for his presence there. Anyone have any ideas?
