Dear Celia,

Your message surprised me a great deal, because it so happens that
SHEMOT (the journal of JGSGB, the Jewish Genealogical Society of
Great Britain) published in its June 2005 (vol 13, no 2) issue my
article titled "Tracking My Ancestors Down Under", which dealt with
the genealogy of my mother's paternal ancestors, members of a MARKS
family that originally came to London >from Amsterdam. In fact, my
own maternal grandfather was born in Auckland, NZ in 1864 -- as a
direct result of my gg p's having emigrated there because of the New
Zealand Gold Rush. And most of his uncles and other collaterals had
emigrated to either Australia or NZ for the same reason!

I am currently expanding the SHEMOT article for publication in the
Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal. Several articles
previously published in that journal provided me with much
information about my MARKS ancestors and their cousins, the COLLINS
family. The COLLINSes, who originally emigrated to Australia in the
1840's, became quite prominent in New South Wales politics in the
mid-19th century.

So, I was surprised to learn that you have found no references to
Jews and the Australian Gold Rush on the Internet!
