The long and interesting life of Henry STERN was the subject of my article in
"Avotaynu" Vol. 23 N. 4 (Winter, 2007). Mr. STERN, who died on July 17, 2014,
was born in 1931 in Warburg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. He was the son
of Arnold and Hedwig STERN and had an older sister, Hannalaora.
The family left Hamburg in 1937 via the SS Washington. They settled in
Opelika, Alabama.

When he was older, Henry lectured throughout Alabama about the
holocaust. For more than 65 years, he searched for information about what
happened to his grandmother and other relatives left behind in Germany. He
finally had a breakthrough the day the Yad Vashem database went live in
November 2004. Henry found a page of testimony for his grandmother which
was written by my father-in-law, Fred HERTZ.

Henry picked up the phone and called Fred, who was living in North Carolina.
Fred explained to Henry that Henry's grandmother was Fred's aunt; therefore
they were cousins. Henry faxed Fred a photo that was taken the day Henry
and his parents left Germany.Fred called Henry back and astonished him
when he said, "Henry, I am in that picture."

NBC TV News carried the story of the cousins being reunited in North Carolina
after 67 years. NBC won an Emmy for their news report. My article in
"Avotaynu" described the incident and gave details about the family.
