Hi - My mother-in-law came to the USA in 1940 after leaving Germany to
work in England as a domestic.
According to an affidavit of support for her parents to come to USA, she
worked at Gluck Knitting Mills 115 West 23rd Street, New York in October,
1940. Her son recalls his mother worked at Reliance Knitting at Astor
Place in New York in 1943 when he was born and after her second child,
she did piece work at home for Reliance.
We are writing the story of her life and would like to confirm her
Can anyone help me with information about Gluck and Reliance? Are they two
different knitting mills or did Gluck become Reliance? Both made gloves,
apparently the thumb and fingers had to be hand knitted. Was this a place
where many refugees worked? Was Astor Place the site of many such
factories in the early 1940s ? Any and all information is appreciated.
