Following up on the suggestion that French passports might shed some
light on the meaning of "hane", Anna Reuter noted what she interpreted
as a discrepancy between hair and eye color entries on a French
passport and on a manifest.
Hair is described as "noir" or black in French on passport.
Two children have eyes that are "noir" or black in French on passportAlthough the French word "noir" does mean "black", it can also mean
"dark". The Collins-Robert dictionary has a specific entry for "yeux
noir" meaning "dark eyes". So there is probably no discrepancy.
