In response to Marc's question on existence of old telephone company
records: The only remnant that exists are old phone books. These can
be a wealth of information showing neighbors and possibly relatives
that lived nearby. Old phone books can be found in many public
libraries. The 42nd Street Library in Manhattan has an extensive
library of phone books for many cities within the US and
internationally.

Business records of the phone company are kept for the requisite
number of years required legally and are then destroyed.
