JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen RE: Genealogy Standards: Names of Cities and Countries? #general

Harold Lewin asked:
"And to give the most egregious example, what does one do for any
individual born in Tel Aviv in 1938? Tel Aviv, Palestine Mandate?"

I tend to disagree with Judith Romney Wegner's reply to Harold
Lewin, " I would describe that person as born simply in "Tel Aviv,

Since we are dealing with Jewish Genealogy we should be consistent when
dealing with Jewish names and anything connected to the land of Israel.

The British during the mandate period called the land of Israel in Hebrew
Aleph Yod which is the Hebrew abbreviation of Eretz Yisrael, the local Jews
of that time pronounced it "Eye."

So being a proud consistent Israeli Jew, in my tree all those born in Israel
before the State of Israel was established (15 May 1948 - 05 Iyar 5708) are
all listed as being born in Eretz Yisrael, this includes all those born,
married or died in Eretz Yisrael before the British Mandate and I will continue
doing the same for all my ancestors and families that I will find going back all
the way (I should be so lucky) to the destruction of the second temple.

All the best,
