Allen Jordan pointed out city directories and incorporation papers are good
sources for Mimi Simon's in her search for a first name of her possible Klein
relative. He owned a pharmacy in New York City.

Businesses incorporated in New York State are searchable on the web site of
the New York State Department of State (how's that for bureaucracy?). Go to
Although the search feature has "partial and "contains" features, it does not
have Soundex. It's also only a first step to finding genealogical information.
It should be noted that many landsmanshaften are in this database, and although
they may be listed as active, that's not necessarily so - it just means that
they weren't formally dissolved.

Another useful resource for finding people who needed a professional license
in New York State, such as pharmacists, physicians, dentists, architects, and
several dozen others, is the searchable database at
