My Mom remembers going to the Lower East Side with my grandmother in the mid 1930s
and having sour milk and a knish. She doesn't remember called it anything but sour
milk. She as well as I agree that Shmetana in Yiddish is sour cream not sour milk.

We used shmetana this way. To a bowl of the stuff would be added some cream
cheese which was fairly solid and was called 'Polish cheese'...
