Seitenbuch is a village about 10 km west of Burghaslach, about 2/3 of the way to Scheinfeld. Burghaslach was never called Seitenbuch, as far as I know. Seitenbuch is small enough that its post office is in Burghaslach. And Burghaslach does have its own Standesamt (civil records office), but (as elsewhere in Bavaria) it only has records >from 1876 onward. Moreover, the Kreisstadt (county seat) of the Kreis in which these two places are found is Neustadt an der Aisch, not Scheinfeld. The Kreis itself is called Kr. Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim. The old Kr. Scheinfeld ceased to exist in 1972. Regarding the records, how do you know about the Matrikel 1808-1875? I don't see them in the Family History Library catalog, so you must have gathered your information elsewhere. There must have been a substantial Jewish presence in Burghaslach, given that a) in 1884 there was a synagogue that employed a cantor, b) as late as 1933 there were 60 Jews living there, and c) 11 researchers are listed at JGFF. Perhaps one of the archives in Franconia (Franken) holds these records. Roger Lustig Princeton, NJ USA research co-ordinator, GerSIG Rudolf Kies, Ph.D. wrote: Hello Terri! |
