My mother's first name was Hodes. I am wondering if anyone might be
able to shed light on the origins of this name. When asked her Hebrew
Name I would always get, "my name is Hodes." That was the end of the
conversation. She was named after her grandmother also named Hodes.
(pronounced Odd- ess). Her friends when she was growing up called her
Alice. (rural Vermont)
My grandparents were >from Vilna, Minsk, Pinsk. My grandparents were
from large familes and they had large families and everyone was namedfor deceased relatives, but I never seemed to understand why there were
no "Hebrew" names. Perhaps I did not ask the right questions or
perhaps they simply didn't know or care.
