JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Ha'Kohen last name clarification #general

There are a considerable number of HaLevi in my KAHAN tree as well. Among the best
known are Gershon Shaul Yom Tov HaLevi HELLER and Israel HaLevi HOROWITZ. Closer
examination indicates that these Levites are ancestors of women who married
Kohanim. Yom Tov HaLevi HELLER's daughter Reziel, for example, married Yaakov
Yosef KAHANA, Rabbi of Brisk, who is my 8G grandfather. Because the HELLER family
also had yichus, a number of R. Yaakov Yosef KAHANA's descendants used the surname
HELLER KAHANA.

What about 17th and 18th century rabbis with the appellation HaLevi? Could they
have been Kohanim? (This is not just an academic question, as I am exploring a
Kohan line of descendancy so I need to know if they could not have been ancestors
