In response to Judi Zimmer's question about an female immigrant dressed as a boy:
My late great uncle arrived in the US at age thirteen in 1904 with my great grandmother and his eleven year old brother. His name was clearly stated as Schloime which is a male Yiddish name. He was listed as a female. I am sure he was not dressed as a girl. This was the error of a purser who was trying to fill out the manifest in a timely or harried fashion. I have also seen such errors on other manifests as well as on the United States census.
