Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Ironically, Saturday morning's air crash in Smolensk, Russia that took the
lives of Poland's President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and 94 others might
have, in a dreadful and tragic manner, succeeded in bringing far greater
attention than might have been expected to the seventieth anniversary of a
previous tragedy -- the wartime massacre by the Soviet NKVD secret police
of over 20,000 members of the Polish officers' corps in the Katyn Forest
and in a number of other locations in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

Among the officers murdered, approximately 5-8% percent were Jews:
primarily doctors, lawyers and civil servants, as well as Polish Army
Chief Rabbi Baruch Steinberg. Most of the victims' names are known, yet
biographical details are often lacking.

This being the case, the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute
extends an appeal to the world Jewish genealogical community to share with
us any knowledge -- particularly any photos or documentation -- you might
have of these officers slain in an attempt to prevent any Polish
resistance to Soviet occupation.

If you know of any of these officers or of another Jewish officer of the
Polish armed forces whose wartime fate remains unknown, please contact us:

Photocopies of such materials would be good, scans even better.

Thank you for helping reclaim another bit of Polish Jewry's memory, as
well as honoring the memory of these fallen soldiers.
