The Sephardic Legacy in New Mexico: A History of the Crypto-Jews A talk and
presentation by Dr. Stanley M. Hordes

Jewish Community Library 1835 Ellis Street San Francisco, CA 94115 7:30 pm

During his tenure as New Mexico State Historian in the 1980's, Dr. Hordes met
people in the Hispanic community who displayed practices suggestive of Jewish
customs, such as lighting candles on Friday night for the Jewish Sabbath and
following Jewish dietary laws. His research led to his award-winning book on the
history of the crypto-Jews in New Mexico. Dr. Hordes will discuss the evolution of
the crypto-Jews >from their origins in the forced conversions of Spain in the 14th
and 15th centuries to the recent past, describing the customs and consciousness
that have survived to this day.

Dr. Stanley M. Hordes is an adjunct research professor at the Latin American and
Iberian Institute of the University of New Mexico. His book "To the End of the
Earth: A History of the Crypto-Jews of New Mexico" was awarded the Gaspar Perez de
Villagre Prize in 2006 by the Historical Society of New Mexico for outstanding
historical publication of the year. In 2007, the book won the Southwest Book
Award, given by the Border Regional Library Association. This event is cosponsored
by the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society.

The discussion is free and open to the public. For more information, contact
