My ancestors arrived on Ellis Island on June 1, 1909 and moved to a tenement house on
Madison Street (NOT Madison Avenue) on the Lower East Side, near Henry and Allen
streets. I'm wondering how they were likely to have gotten >from Ellis Island to
their apartment building. Presumably, a ferry took them >from Ellis Island to what is
now Battery Park -- but then what? Did they travel by cab (horse drawn or
automobile?); trolley? The latter seems unlikely given how much stuff they must have
been schlepping with them. Thanks for any help.
