Arline and Sidney Sachs
I have over 3000 pages written by my g.g.grandfather in the German
language but using the Hebrew script letters. He lived in Kastel, across
the river >from Mainz. However he also wrote in German, when copying a
letter >from his daughter, and in Hebrew capital letters when writing
something in Hebrew.
He wrote >from 1817 through 1871. You can read about him in "The Diaries
of Bernhard Kahn" published by Avotaynu some years ago.
When I first was learning about the language I was told it was an old form
of Yiddish, but this was not the case. I always found the words I did know
in an old (1887) German/English dictionary.
