Utah was one of 40 US settlements known as "Back to the Soil" which
permitted settlers, many >from Eastern Europe, to try a way of living that their ancestors were prevented >from having--owning land. This past weekend there was a commemoration of the 100 year anniversary when more than 250 people over 5 years moved to a settlement near today's Gunnison, Utah. The first 12 settlers arrived in September 1911 to a place they named Clarion--the farming was tough and most left by 1916-but the legacy is an important part of Jewish settler history.
