In its series, Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos 1933-1945, the USHMM has
just released a 2 volume work, Ghettos in German Occupied Eastern Europe,
1,972 pages ,which identify and briefly describe 1,142 ghettos, as well as
neighboring towns whose residents were swept into the ghettos located in
Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Greece and
Bohemia-Moravia. (Ghettos in other countries will be described in future
volumes) While each decryption is brief, 1-4 pages, they include references
to where further information can be located and identify key figures in each
ghetto.

This reference source is not cheap -- ca. $200. However, in my opinion, it
is by far the most comprehensive single source of information on a subject
of interest to virtually all Jewish genealogists and I hope they will urge
their libraries and research centers to purchase it.

The USHMM plans to post the index to the ghettos and towns which are
included, but this may take several months to become available. In the
meantime I will be sending the 34 page index to SIGs (and other groups who
are interested), and they are free to distribute/post the index through
their own means.
