I've been trying to find out where some cousins >from Philadelphia are for years.
My grandfather, among many other cousins, had a cousin Bernard E. Gilbert
(1896-1975). He was married to Anna Krakauer Gilbert (1901-1955).They had two
children Edward (b. ca. 1923) and Evelyn Gilbert (b. 1929).Bernard owned and
ran the Archway Book Store, 49 N. 9th Street, Philadelphia, and lived at 6038
N. 19th Street, Philadelphia. I finally found Bernard and Anna's obituaries
in the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent when it was available online free for
National Library Week. By 1975 Evelyn was married and listed as Evelyn Harris.
Edward was listed as David E. Gilbert, and it was stated that Bernard had
4 grandchildren at the time of his death. According to a cousin who has not
seen either since the 1940s, she heard that Evelyn went on a round-the-world
cruise and married the captain of the ship. He died of cancer at a relatively
young age and she may not have lived long after that.
My cousin thought they might have settled in the Northeast, not Philadelphia
but she doesn't know. Other nearer relatives lost touch with them and knew
In frustration, I'm hoping that some of you might be >from Philadelphia
and remember this Gilbert family. Even if David E. Gilbert and Evelyn Harris
are dead, those four grandchildren might be alive and I have a lot of family
history to share.
