JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Research Your Litvak Roots Using the LitvakSIG Website with Bill Israel - June 10 Program for JGS of Tampa Bay #general

Sally Israel

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay will meet at Gulf Coast
Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater, Florida on Sunday
June 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM.

The meeting topic will be "Research Your Litvak Roots Using the
LitvakSIG Website." The presentation will be by Bill Israel, who serves
on the Board of the LitvakSIG (Lithuanian-Jewish Special Interest
Group), is the co-webmaster of the LItvakSIG Members-only website, and
who is a past president and a founding member of the Jewish Genealogical
Society of Tampa Bay.

Mr. Israel's talk will focus on how to make effective use of the
LitvakSIG's extensive set of websites and online data resources
containing nearly 1.5 million records. The LitvakSIG website is the
primary Internet resource for Lithuanian-Jewish (Litvak) genealogy
research worldwide. The LitvakSIG is dedicated to discovering and
preserving Lithuanian-Jewish heritage. Its mission is to discover,
collect, document, disseminate, and preserve information about the once
vibrant Jewish community of Lithuania. The LitvakSIG.org website is a
platform for providing this information, and it is a gateway to
searchable databases for the public. In addition, the LitvakSIG hosts a
Members-Only website with added content that describes the various
research projects, and it provides a roadmap for all translated records.
Newly transcribed records are available to LitvakSIG members at least
18 months before they are released to the public through JewishGen
and through the All Lithuania Database (ALD). Mr. Israel will present
an overview of the LitvakSIG databases and will demonstrate how to use
them.

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay's library and research
resources are available to all meeting attendees and can be loaned out
to members. Anyone interested in learning how to do Jewish genealogy
research is invited to participate. Beginners as well as experienced
researchers are welcome.

The pre-program social with refreshments and library access begins at
1:30 PM, and the featured program starts at 2:00 PM. For information
about the organization or directions to the meeting, call Sally Israel
at 727-343-1652.
